Can you share what Latin American Heritage Month means to you personally?
Latin American Month is a time of reflection, celebration, and deep pride. It’s a moment to honor the sacrifices my parents made when they left the Dominican Republic in search of a better life, leaving my sister and me behind so they could build a foundation for our future. It’s a time to recognize the strength of our community, the beauty of our culture, and the legacy we carry. For me, it’s personal. It’s about remembering where I come from, the values that shaped me, and the joy of being part of a vibrant, resilient, and generous people. It’s also a time to amplify our stories that don’t always make headlines but are the heartbeat of this country.
What comes to mind when you think of the culture, heritage, history and contributions of Hispanic or Latino Americans?
I think of perseverance, brilliance, and joy. I think of my parents working three to four jobs, navigating a new language, and still making sure our home was filled with Dominican music, food, and laughter. I think of the countless Hispanic and Latinx Americans who have contributed to every corner of society, from education and politics to art and science, often while overcoming systemic barriers. Our heritage is rich with stories of migration, community-building, and cultural preservation. We are a people who create beauty out of struggle, who lift each other up, and who never forget our roots.
The 2025 theme is “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future”. What cultural traditions or values have you passed down to future generations?
I’ve passed down the values of humility, kindness, and generosity to my amazing kids, Daxylee and Liam. The same values my parents instilled in me. In our family, we celebrate with music, dance, and food, but we also teach the importance of hard work, education, and community. We honor our elders, help those in need, and stay connected to our Dominican roots. Whether it’s cooking traditional meals together, speaking Spanglish at home, or sharing stories of our journey, I make sure my kids know where they come from and what it means to live with integrity and pride. Our collective heritage is not just history; it’s a living legacy.
Can you share a significant moment or achievement in your life that you attribute to your Hispanic heritage?
One of my proudest achievements is earning my degree from Mount Holyoke College while my parents beamed with pride and joy. It was so special! Not just because of the academic accomplishment, but because of what it represented. It was the culmination of my parents’ sacrifices, their sleepless nights, and their unwavering belief in my potential. That moment was not mine alone; it belonged to my entire family, to our Dominican heritage, and to the values that carried me through every challenge.
What cultural traditions or celebrations do you look forward to during Latin American Heritage Month?
Whether it’s cooking sancocho or mangu with loved ones or dancing to bachata at a local festival, I cherish these community gatherings that celebrate our music, dance, and food, especially those highlighting Dominican culture. It’s a time to reconnect, honor our ancestors, and celebrate the richness of our heritage.
